Sam Neill descends into madness in John Carpenter’s psychological horror-fest
In honor of the passing of actor David Warner today, I rewatched him in John Carpenter’s psychological horror film In the Mouth of Madness (1994). He died of cancer in London, surrounded by family. He was 80 years old.
Warner had a small role in this movie as Dr. Wrenn, but I will forever remember Warner for playing “Evil” in the 1981 British fantasy flick Time Bandits. He also played the roles of Dillinger/Sark in Tron (1982) and as Keith Jennings in The Omen (1976).
In the Mouth of Madness stars Sam Neill (Jurassic Park series) and has small roles for a number of other actors who I enjoyed in some of my other favorite movies, including Charlton Heston (Planet of the Apes), Frances Bay (the sweet, old grandma in Happy Gilmore), Wilhelm von Homburg (Vigo from Ghostbusters II) and the first movie appearance of a 13-year-old Hayden Christensen (Star Wars prequels).
In the Mouth of Madness is named after H.P. Lovecraft’s novella, “At the Mountains of Madness” and the film is brimming with Lovecraftian references and tentacled beasts. The movie explores the Lovecraft theme of humans going insane after exposure to otherworldly entities.
Not my favorite Carpenter film, but it is still a fun ride with good Carpenter scoring, excellent costumes and special effects, and fine cinematography.
Once you’ve seen this movie, you know that there is only one question that really matters…
